About Us
We are a consulting/advisory and execution firm comprised of a group of finance and technology professionals with
specialized expertise in the financial, legal, non-profit and insurance industries, focusing on targeted engagements
involving business turn-around, financial restructuring, capital raising, and developing tools to enhance business and
marketing productivity. Each individual brings over 15 years of client development, business strategy, and product
development expertise.
Richard H. Bernero, Founder & Principal
Mr. Bernero is a finance and technology professional with specialized expertise in the financial, legal and insurance
industries. As founder and principal of Five Mile River Group, he has focused on targeted engagements involving
business turn-around situations, financial restructuring, capital raising, and developing tools to enhance business and
marketing productivity. His most recent client engagement is serving as Treasurer and Risk Manager for a well-
established NYC non-profit. Amongst his responsibilities are overseeing financial review and feasibility study for
establishment of in-house preschool; development and oversight of a multi-million dollar capital campaign to fund
major capital improvements, property reclamation and funding of three new endowments; oversight of day-to-day
financial operations, financial reporting, and investment management; and oversight of multi-million dollar endowment.
During the 2007-2008 period, Mr. Bernero was hired as Interim Director of Finance for a pre-K through 8th Grade
coeducationl independent school in Suffolk County, where he was brought in to reestablish a Business Office after over
14 years of reliance on a part-time bookeeper, manage and oversee a $2.6 million annual operating budget, overhaul
vendor and student contracts, establish internal controls, and review and overhaul employee benefits.
Previously, he completed a five month engagement by a global law firm ranked in the top 25 by size as Chief
Knowledge Management Officer/ Project Leader to develop a Knowledge Management System to enhance business
development and cross-selling. Additional recent engagements have included providing financial market strategy and
market trend analysis to the Marketing Directors Institute (a consortium of law firm marketing professionals, predominantly
Chief Marketing Officer and Marketing Managers from Amlaw 200 law firms); serving as Chief Financial Officer for the
Marketing Directors Institute; and serving as a sales and fund raising consultant to a Reston, VA document management
and compliance software startup .
His professional experience includes serving as Vice President, Treasurer, Board Member and founding member of
Rhine Re Financial Ltd. , Rhine Re Insurance Ltd., and Rhine Re Life Insurance Ltd. , three of the five private financial
service companies acquired in conjunction with the management-led-buyout of the Insurance Products Group at
Bankers Trust by RR Holding Company Ltd. (a KKR portfolio company, now Alea Group Holdings AG) in December
1998. He oversaw all treasury, investment management, rating agency and regulatory authority relationships, and
financial reporting functions for the three main US operating companies. He was subsequently responsible for Alea
North America’s finite / structured products/financial risk solutions business.
He previously spent six years with Bankers Trust’s Insurance Derivatives /Insurance Products Group, where he responsible
for structuring and new product development, and co-responsible for marketing relationships with the (re)insurance
community in North America and Bermuda.
Prior to joining Bankers Trust, Mr. Bernero worked with J.P. Morgan’s Global Distribution and Marketing team, offering
quantitative analytics and foreign exchange risk management products to corporations and pension funds.
A graduate of Brown University, Mr. Bernero holds B.A. degrees in International Political Economics and Material
Science Engineering. He is also a recipient of a Certificate in Fundraising and Development from New York University's
George H. Heyman, Jr. Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising.
